Green Jobs

 

Green jobs, as defined by the International Labor Organization (2011) refer to employment in any industry that contributes to preserving or restoring environmental quality in that sector and allowing for sustainable development. Green jobs are decent jobs that contribute to preserve or restore the environment, be they in traditional sectors such as manufacturing and construction, or in new, emerging green sectors such as renewable energy and energy efficiency. Green jobs help: Improve energy and raw materials efficiency. Jobs that help meets the aspiration of workers, without discrimination, in terms of income, rights, voice, recognition, family stability and personal development. Jobs aiming to preserve or restore environmental quality. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize (or altogether avoid) generation of all forms of waste and pollution.

Green jobs encourage the following activities:

(1) The adaptation and mitigation of resources,

(2) Contribution in preserving environmental quality,

(3) Promotion in protecting ecosystems and biodiversity,

(4) Leadership in reducing energy, materials and water consumption,

(5) De-carbonization of the economy and encouragement of the reduction of pollution and wastes.

 

Green jobs or employment practices encourages the use energy-efficient materials in building materials and maintenance, proper solid waste management, controlled water supply and reduction of CO₂ and the use of green technology.
