Humanity is the human race, which includes everyone on Earth. The word humanity is from the Latin humanitas for "human nature, kindness.” Humanity includes all the humans, but it can also refer to the kind feelings humans often have for each other. Humanity itself defines its meaning i.e. to serve for needy people and to participate in their day to day life and be a part of it. Losing humanity is when we forget the purpose of taking birth as humans. “Respect and honour all human beings irrespective of their religion, color, race, sex, language, status, property, birth, profession/job and so on” (Al Quran 17:70). Humanity is all about being human and not inhuman. It means living with emotions and intelligence. “Humanity is but a single brotherhood. So make peace with your brethren” (Al Quran 49:10). “Whoever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved he life of all mankind” (Al Quran 5:32). Humanity is all about feeling love and compassion for others, for other people, be they relatives or even people who are distant from our life. It’s a feeling of love and compassion for everyone, irrespective of religion, caste and creed, irrespective of nationality, and even for our enemies. Matters like religion, caste, creed and nationality often separate people and do not unite them.

Humanity, however, is much more than that. The feeling of love and compassion is not just for human beings, but also for plants and animals (for the entire vegetable and animal kingdom) and also for the environment in which we live.

Humanity means radiating love and care for all life on this planet, and even for the planet in which we live. “If someone is not your brother in faith, he is your brother in humanity” (Imam Ali). Only then we can say we belong to humanity. Unfortunately, many of us have alienated ourselves from humanity. We have become inhuman in many ways..

What is the importance of humanity?

Humanity means caring for and helping others whenever and wherever possible. Humanity means helping others at times when they need that help the most, humanity means forgetting our selfish interests at times when others need our help. Humanity means extending unconditional love to each and every living being on Earth.

How can we show humanity?

To show gratitude. A simple thank you, a note or even a smile will go a long way, as people strive to fit more and more in each 24-hour day. Show gratitude to anyone who demonstrates humanity to you. That includes your associates.
